Fantasy author David Eddings died on June 3rd at the age of 77. scifi.about.com/b/2009/06/03/d…
It's sad because I remember his Belgariad series as one of the first 'adult' fantasy series that I ever read. My dad, a high school librarian, 'lent' the books to me when I was about 11 or 12 and I've loved them ever since and they played as much a part of sparking my love of magic and fantasy as The Lord of the Rings did. Eddings' plots are classic fantasy but I've always loved how down to earth his characters are, proof that you can take an old idea and still make something wonderful out of it. May he rest in peace.

RIP Anne McCaffrey
One of my favorite authors, Anne McCafrey, passed away yesterday. It's perhaps not a shock because I knew she was an elderly woman, but that doesn't really lessen my sadness.
She was an extremely influential author being one of the few women writing sci-fi way back in the late sixties. She opened the genre to other women writers and she also made the genre more open to female readers.
I first started reading her books in Grade 5 when a friend introduced them to me. They were some of the first 'adult' books I read and we always got a thrill out of reading about dragons and spaceships when everyone else our age was reading The Babysitters

I got a job! I just got a call to say that I'll be working part-time at Chapters bookstore - I'm so happy that I'll no longer be unemployed and broke. ^_^

Achoo!
First cold of the winter - blah. At least it's the weekend so I can stay at home in my pjs and drink tea all day long. It doesn't exempt me from homework unfortunately. :tea:
I'm getting the hang of my (as yet nameless) shiny new HP Pavillion laptop. I still need to download GIMP onto it, but then I should be back to editing photos and posting them here on DevArt. I've got some really nice ones too (at least in my inexperienced opinion).

35ºC today and even late at night it doesn't feel like it's cooled down any. Gah.
So I've been interested in getting more people seeing my deviations - particularly my photos - and in learning how I can impove their quality, so I joined a bunch of groups here on DA. So far things have been going well - I got a lot of good photography advice and learned a lot just by examining what groups accepted and what other people submitted. Some of my photos got shot down but that's to be expected and I have no problem with honest, constructive critism.
I'm also slowly becoming more adept at GIMP, though if anyone can point me in the direction
