Today marks the 40th anniversary of the day that astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11 walked on the moon; the very first human beings to do so. It was, to me, who wouldn't even be born for another 15 years after it happened, an incredible time in humanity's history.
As a Canadian I'll be the first to say that I'm not terribly impressed with most of the U.S.'s shenanigans during the Cold War, but for some reason the space program has always fascinated me. Maybe because in the end it meant so much more than just a race to beat the Soviets to the moon; it became about the exploration of unknown territory and a tribute to human achievement.
A great mini-series about the Apollo program is From the Earth to the Moon an HBO dramatized documentary produced by Tom Hanks. It's an amazingly true-to-life documentary that manages to capture the human as well as the technical aspects of space program exceptionally well. And there were sooo many quotable lines, both funny and serious, and all of them factual.
From the episode 'Mare Tranquilitatis' (the Apollo 11 moon landing):
[discussing what Neil Armstrong will say when he steps onto the surface of the moon]
Frank Borman: What are you guys gonna say?
Michael Collins: If you had any balls, you'd say "Oh, my God, what is that thing?" then scream and cut your mike.

RIP Anne McCaffrey
One of my favorite authors, Anne McCafrey, passed away yesterday. It's perhaps not a shock because I knew she was an elderly woman, but that doesn't really lessen my sadness.
She was an extremely influential author being one of the few women writing sci-fi way back in the late sixties. She opened the genre to other women writers and she also made the genre more open to female readers.
I first started reading her books in Grade 5 when a friend introduced them to me. They were some of the first 'adult' books I read and we always got a thrill out of reading about dragons and spaceships when everyone else our age was reading The Babysitters

I got a job! I just got a call to say that I'll be working part-time at Chapters bookstore - I'm so happy that I'll no longer be unemployed and broke. ^_^

Achoo!
First cold of the winter - blah. At least it's the weekend so I can stay at home in my pjs and drink tea all day long. It doesn't exempt me from homework unfortunately. :tea:
I'm getting the hang of my (as yet nameless) shiny new HP Pavillion laptop. I still need to download GIMP onto it, but then I should be back to editing photos and posting them here on DevArt. I've got some really nice ones too (at least in my inexperienced opinion).

35ºC today and even late at night it doesn't feel like it's cooled down any. Gah.
So I've been interested in getting more people seeing my deviations - particularly my photos - and in learning how I can impove their quality, so I joined a bunch of groups here on DA. So far things have been going well - I got a lot of good photography advice and learned a lot just by examining what groups accepted and what other people submitted. Some of my photos got shot down but that's to be expected and I have no problem with honest, constructive critism.
I'm also slowly becoming more adept at GIMP, though if anyone can point me in the direction
